Business Plan
My business idea is an app that would modify work for students. Students would take a test at the beginning of the school year for the app to determine what they know and where they are in each subject. When the teacher uses a smartboard, the student would have a tablet that mimics the smartboard activity. Whatever is shown on the smartboard, is shown on the child’s tablet. If the child isn’t on grade level, or is struggling with the content, the app would be able to modify the work so the student gets the overall concept of the lesson without feeling overwhelmed by not being able to do the work. The app could also translate for students who are not fluent in English. This idea would require students to have tablets, and a teacher to have a smartboard, but a lot of classrooms and school districts are switching to a more technologically advanced classroom anyway. This app would also help include the students who are in special education. The app would allow for a more one on one educational experience for students who need more help with their school work and for teachers who don’t have the class time to give it to those who need it. The app would notify teachers as to where the students are with the material and what concepts each student is understanding, and which ones they are not. This app would mostly be used for math, but could also be used for reading, writing and social studies. It would also reduce the amount of paper a teacher would need to copy and print for each student. A classroom could become almost (with the exception of writing) paperless, and all assignments could be graded and recorded electronically.

Dear Dr. Kline,
Hello, my name is Laura Lesueur and I met you recently at Outback Steakhouse. I was your server, on your birthday. I wanted to get in touch with you to see how your school year was going so far and to say thank you for your words of advice. Recently in class we were speaking about the many different career paths one can have in education and I immediately thought of you and your family. Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom with me, they have further fueled my drive to become an educator.
At dinner you and I had spoke about me possibly doing my student teaching in special education over summer in Columbus City Schools, so that I wouldn't have to quit my special education assistant job in Worthington. I am very interested in looking into this as an option and wanted to know who I should speak to in your district to help make summer student teaching possible. I appreciate all your support and encouragement as I go through my educational journey.
Sincerely,
Laura Lesueur
Classroom Management
Classroom management ideas for Early Elementary (k-3)
- Posted rewards system ( Special Education Classroom)
Students will have the potential to earn 6 'dots' for completing tasks throughout the day. The 'dots' will be given after completion of a task if the task is done to the best of the students ability and the student is compliant to staff directions. The 'dots' can be removed from the track for poor behavior or for non-compliance. At the end of the day if a student has 6 'dots' on the track the student will earn a star for the day. If the student only earns 3 dots on the track, they will receive a half star. Every student starts the day with 1 dot for good bus behavior At the end of every two weeks (10 school days) students with 8 and a half stars, or more, will be allowed one choice item from the prize box. The stars will then be taken down and the student can take home the stars.
-Strikes (General Education Classroom)
If a student is continually non-compliant or disruptive after being prompted not to do so, their name will be written on the board. If the student continues the distracting or unsafe behavior a strike will be added. Every strike is 5 minutes off their recess. After 3 strikes, an entire recess will be lost and the student's parent will be called to notify parent of students behavior
-Warm Fuzzies (General Education classroom, Individual student/ whole class)
A warm fuzzy ( craft pom pom) will be placed in a clear jar when a whole class does a desired behavior. For example if the whole class walks from the classroom to the gymnasiam quietly they will earn a warm fuzzy. Warm fuzzies can be given for any positive behaviors that the class may have. After filling a designated jar of warm fuzzies the class earns an extra 15 minute recess.
Warm fuzzies can also be given to individual students who struggle with behavior. For example if a student struggles with sitting the correct way on the carpet, a warm fuzzy will be given to them each and every time they are found sitting correctly on the carpet. This could be for any student who struggles with a specific behavior. (Stickers could also be used and charted until the behavior is common enough that it no longer needs an earned reward)
OATH
I promise to try every day to make a positive impact in the lives I come across. I promise to try to have understanding, patience and compassion for my students, co workers and myself. I promise to meet children where they are at in their education and help them grow and learn on their own terms regardless of the norm. I promise to support and protect my students and to always have their best interest at heart. I promise to be the best educator I can be.
Readings The History of Education Mohammedans inSpain
During this time period education was done by doing. People learned by being out in the fields and working with the agriculture of the land. Due to conquests and wars, the Mohammedans in Spain came across the Greek’s style of education. They began learning from the Greeks and set up schools based on Greek learning and Greek philosophical thought. Haroun-al-Raschid became a Capiph at Bagdad and made an intellectual center of 1st importance. Many ‘schools’ opened in connection to a church, a university was founded and based off of a Greek model, and a library and observatory were built. A lot of learning was done by observation and through conversation.
18th Century
During the 18th Century many of the old world problems were beginning to be solved. There was still a disagreement with what the Christian church was teaching. This disagreement caused a revolt which caused a new way of thinking. During these new times there was a development in scientific thinking and discovery. There was also growth of consciousness of national problems and intellectual freedom. People began to believe that they had the right to think the way they wanted and research the things they wanted to research instead of what the church wanted them to believe and research.
Greek- Aristotle
During Aristotle’s time, boys and girls were separated in their education. Boys at the age of 8 would be taken from the home and would live in a public barrack where they were taught physical drill and instruction in Spartan virtues by male elders. Their lessons included, running, leaping, boxing, wrestling, military drill, military music, ball-playing, spear throwing, stealing and Laconic speech. In their 18-20’s they went to war training and then often off to war. If they survived the war they were free to marry and have children.
Girls during this time period were kept home much longer than the boys and they were not taught nearly as much as the boys were. They were instructed in gymnastics so that they would have strong bodies to bare strong, healthy babies. Their form of instruction was listening to elder men talk.
1791- Thomas Paine & Adam Smith
Both Paine and Smith believed that all children must be educated and that education was a safeguard to society. Children should be allowed to go to school and learn. Both Smith and Paine saw that society was running out of resources and they believed that if society was educated it would fix the problem of diminishing resources.
1780- Rousseau
Rousseau did not believe in the social and religious theory being taught during that time period. He did not like the children were expected to act as adults. He believed that children should learn through life amid nature, behaving in childish ways, playing sports, and having parental love. He believed in an education that considered the instincts and natural development of children.
Similarities.
All these societies and people believe that there has to be some sort of structure and that learning needs to happen in an environment other than the home. All learning is done by an elder in the society, or someone who has been noted as a scholar. All beliefs in education were designed around the society and their beliefs. Differences
A difference is that some education was based around religion and some was based off free-spirit. Some educators believed that young men should learn to fight, and some believed they need to be raised as thinkers and inventors. Some educators like Smith and Paine believed that every child should get an education while the Greeks believed that if you weren’t born with certain characteristics that you weren’t worthy of being taught and should be left on a mountainside to die. Some societies believed that education was needed throughout adolescence and some believed that it was only needed for a year, or until mastery of a task.
I agree that all students need to be taught regardless of birth characteristics. I also believe that education needs to be lead by an elder, or someone with a level of mastery. I believe that learning can happen among peers, much like the Mohammedans in Spain learned by doing and experimenting with the land. Like Rousseau, I think that learning through play is important and I agree that young students should not come to school and expect to act like young adults. They should be free to be themselves and have parental love. I believe, like Smith and Paine, that a good education system can help a child to better the world. I also think that education should be based on the societies and cultures around us. Education needs to be made relevant to today’s world and today’s learners.
African American Reading
This compared to some of the earlier readings in that Fredrick Douglas was taught by several individuals rather than one. He sought out his own education after being taught the alphabet by his Mistress. He would ask young boys to teach him to read, and eventually copied the letters off of timber to learn to write. He learned by watching others, and by reading several different books.
Pedagogy Reading
John Dewey believed that learning started at birth. Children learn by the demands they need met. They will learn to meet their own demands. Education is a psychological and social make up. Dewey believed that the school is a social institution in which social life was to be simplified and taught to students. The Greeks used school for the same reasons, to teach of their social ways and behaviors and to implement their ideas and goals for the society to better society.
Philosophy Statement
The purpose of education is to aid the young minds of society into a deeper level of understanding the world around them. Students role in education is to gain the knowledge of those around them, and then expand their knowledge based off their own inferences and discoveries. The teachers role is to facilitate learning, and encourage all types of learning to be done in the classroom. The teachers role is to also take students where they are and show them the ways of the world through practice and play to help develop their thought process further. Educators should custom make each child’s education based on their needs interests and learning goals. Although it may seem difficult to individualize each students education, I believe it can be done by over generalizing assignments and activities. All students can succeed and become a productive part of society. Every child can learn. It is a teachers job to exhaust all resources when a child is struggling. I will always try several different methods of instruction until I find one that helps a student succeed. I will never give up on a student, if I have run out of resources I will communicate with colleges and other members of my school community that may be able to help. The teacher is a role model in the community. They must always be teaching, weather it’s in a classroom or at the grocery store, a teacher is always teaching. Outside of the school the teacher can lead by example in their behavior and lifestyle. Teachers better the community by opening the minds of their students to be tolerant, patient and kind to all around them regardless of race, ethnicity and culture. I will teach my students to have their own voice in society but to be mindful that others voices may not all sound the same. I believe students learn by experience and practice. Every student learns in a different way therefore, they should be taught in different ways. Educators should teach in many different forms to be able to maximize the learning in their classrooms. I believe that children will learn how to behave in a classroom by watching their peers and being rewarded for positive behavior choices. Young students should be given incentives for doing the right thing. All rewards should be positive so that learning can be positive. School should be a positive place, the attitudes of teachers should be positive. When students get frustrated teachers should step in to help re-explain the lesson, or modify the work to help lower the level of frustration but still allow for educational growth. Assessments should be taken when students feel most confident in their learning. If a student hasn’t mastered a concept than they should wait to take an assessment, and more practice should be done to help them to be ready for the assessment. If the type of assessment is an issue, than it should be changed to something more comfortable for that student so that their new knowledge can be celebrated instead of strained. In my classroom learning will be celebrated. In my classroom all students will feel valuable. Their input and knowledge will be cherished and acknowledged. I believe that the most important concepts I will teach are responsibility, compassion and a love for learning.
